HIRAM, OHIO -- The Hiram College baseball team lost to Wabash (Ind.) College, 4-1, in a single nine-inning North Coast Athletic Conference matchup at Robert O. Fishel Field in the season finale.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Hiram (15-22, 3-16 NCAC) got on the board with a run on a RBI fielder's choice by sophomore Ron DeAmicis (Austintown/Fitch). Wabash (16-23, 8-11 NCAC) came back to tie the game in the top of the sixth on a double and then took the lead in the seventh on a solo homerun to make the score 2-1. The Little Giants put the game away in the eighth crossing the plate twice to increase the lead to 4-1 and go on to the three-run victory.
Hiram recorded four hits in the game with junior Shane Haidet (Alliance/Marlington) finishing two-of-four at the plate. Junior Jim Jaksa (Chesterland/West Geauga) also recorded a base hit in his only at-bat and senior Lee Cancilla (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) ended the game one-of-four to go along with a run scored.
Senior Mike Lalonde (Willowick/South) started the game and pitched seven-and-a-third innings allowing four runs on seven hits and struck out eight batters. He was also credited with the loss and ends the year at 0-4. Freshman Evan Wutrick (Alliance/Marlington) pitched an inning and two-thirds of relief giving up no runs and just one hit while striking out three batters.
