DELAWARE, Ohio – Although junior Kelvin Jones finished with another double-double performance, the Hiram College men's basketball team dropped their season series finale against Ohio Wesleyan by a final score of 71-62 on Wednesday night.
Jones's double-double marks his twelfth on the season. The center tallied 18 points and ten rebounds in his 29 minutes of play.
The Battling Bishops were led by Ben Simpson, who finished the game with 19 points and ten rebounds. Nate Axelrod and Seth Clark were also key contributors, with each of them adding 14 and 12 points.
Hiram took their largest lead of the game (7) in the first half. At the 14:30 mark, the teams were all tied up at 11. The Terriers then went on a 7-0 scoring run to make the score 18-11 with 11:33 left in the half. Senior Joe Caspio tacked on four of the points and senior Kyle Deckerd posted a three pointer.
The Terriers continued to hold the lead until the 2:56 mark. The Battling Bishops then took the momentum and finished the half on a 10-5 run to take a five-point lead going into halftime (38-33).
Ohio Wesleyan continued to add to their lead in the second half, taking a lead as high as 10 with 7:40 remaining in the contest (62-52). Hiram was able to fight back and come within three points of the Battling Bishops the 2:42 mark (65-62). However, six straight points from Ohio Wesleyan in the final minutes secured the win for the Battling Bishops.
The deciding factor of the game was turnovers. Over the course of the game, Hiram turned the ball over 16 times, which converted into 11 points for the Battling Bishops.
The Terriers will be back on the road this Saturday, February 11, when they face the Tigers of Wittenberg University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
