Dec. 2 – OBERLIN, Ohio – The Hiram men's basketball team claimed their first conference victory of the season, defeating the Yeomen of Oberlin College, Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers were off to a quick start, with senior Kelvin Jones knocking down three points in the first minute of play.
Hiram was able to maintain the momentum for the following minutes, forcing seven turnovers and keeping Oberlin at bay.
More than halfway into the first 20 minutes, the teams found themselves within a basket (23-20). From there, however, the Terriers raced ahead using a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 32-22 with 6:33 remaining. Jones knocked down another triple, before freshman Jalen Kirksey added four points, including a dunk. Sherman Dean III helped cap the run that gave Hiram the 10-point advantage.
The Terriers' Terrence Warren and Jones with a little over a minute left in the half extended the lead to 3, with 1 second left on the clock. Jones drove to the basket beating the clock extending Hiram's lead to five going into halftime (46-41).
Hiram opened up the second stanza with Jones mirroring his first-half performance, posting four points in the opening minutes. Despite Oberlin's effort to chip away at the deficit for the remaining minutes, Hiram held the lead for the rest of the game, outscoring the Yeomen 38-22 in the paint.
The Terriers held a 10-4 advantage in steals while forcing 16 turnovers.
Inside the 15th minute of play, the Terriers held the Yeomen to six points, and sophomore Brevin Dye knocked down a three to broaden the lead to ten points (57-47).
In the following ten minutes, Oberlin made efforts to shrink the deficit, but their largest run was only four points.
Jones pushed the Hiram lead to one of the largest of the night (74-61) with a steal and a layup with 6:57 remaining on the clock. Hiram would maintain their lead for the rest of the night, holding on for the double-digit win.
Three Terriers totaled double digit numbers in scoring. Jones had a season high with 25 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Warren added 15 points, two rebounds, and two assists, while Ortiz tallied 12 points, a rebound, and an assist.
The Terriers will be back in action on Wednesday, December 6, as they travel to Wooster, Ohio to take on the Fighting Scots. The matchup is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
