Dec. 9 - HIRAM, Ohio - The Hiram College men's basketball team posted their second conference victory of the season, defeating Allegheny 87-66, Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers were able to grab the momentum of the game by shooting 95 percent from the free-throw line, while outrebounding the Gators 40-32 and forcing 18 turnovers.
Offensively, the Terriers had four players score in double digits with senior duo Terrence Warren and Kelvin Jones leading the way with 14 points apiece. Jones secured a double-double picking up 10 rebounds, three assists, and five steals.
Senior Paul Ortiz had 12 points, while adding three rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Freshman Jalen Kirksey finished the night with 10 points, just a point shy of tying his career high.
Additionally, the Terrier bench totaled 31 points, led by sophomore Sherman Dean III with a season high 10 points. Senior Isaiah Matthews added six on the night, while Jared Bazil finished with four.
The opening minutes of the first half set the tone for the afternoon. The Terriers were the first to get on the board with sophomore Brevin Dye sinking a three.
Jones and Warren followed suit, knocking down a basket apiece before Allegheny was able to get on the board.
Inside of the 13-minute mark of the first half, it looked as if the tides began to turn for the Terriers. The Gators began a 10-point run, taking the lead for the first time (17-9) with 12:15 left in the first half.
The Terriers, down by eight points, began to shrink the deficit with a three from Warren, and back to back baskets from Kirksey to put the Terriers back within two (21-19).
The next few minutes were filled with scoring from Sam Hitchcock dropping two from the charity stripe, a basket from Kirksey, as well as back-to-back threes from Ortiz and Matthews.
Inside the five-minute mark the Terriers were able to hold the Gators off and extend the lead to 39-35.
Warren opened up the second half with a three in the first minute. Mirroring the first half energy, Hiram went on an eight-point run before the Gators could tally their first score.
Dean would help spark a run in the final seven minutes to push the lead to the largest of the game. The sophomore tallied a pair of free throws before Ortiz tallied six points from the stripe in the closing minutes.
The free throws, plus a fast-break Kirksey dunk, and a Jones layup helped give Hiram their largest lead of the game with 24 points and less than three minutes on the clock. The Terriers would then go on for the 21-point victory.
The Terriers will be back in action on Saturday, December 16. The conference matchup is scheduled for a 2 pm start in Price Gymnasium.
