HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Hiram College men's lacrosse team recorded its second victory of the season with an 11-7 win against Houghton (N.Y.) College led by freshman Douglas Legris' (Fairfax, Verm./Bellows Free Academy) four goals, in a non-conference game in Houghton, N.Y.
The two teams combined for only two goals in the first quarter with Houghton's (0-6) goal coming just seven seconds into the game at the 14:53 minute mark to grab the early lead. Hiram (2-4) later evened the score at 1-1 with a score by sophomore John Deegan (Lakewood/St. Edward) on a man-up advantage. Fellow sophomore Chris Lekan (North Olmsted/Holy Name) was credited with an assist on the Deegan goal as both teams were tied at a goal apiece after the first 15 minutes.
Both teams traded two goals in the second period with Legris' first goal of the game coming at the 8:04 mark to begin the scoring with a helper from sophomore Alex Ham (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin). The other Hiram score came off the stick of All-North Coast Athletic Conference sophomore Greg Summers (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary's) with 5:04 left in the quarter resulting in a 3-2 lead for the Terriers. Lekan recorded his second assist of the game on the Summers' goal. Houghton came back to tied the game just before the end of the half to send the two teams deadlocked at 3-3 at the intermission.
Hiram looked to take control in the third quarter scoring all seven goals in the period with three scores from Legris, two from Summers and a goal each from Lekan and Deegan. Summers, Legris and Lekan would also score assists. For Lekan, it would be his third assist of the game. The seven goals would put the Terriers in command, 10-3, heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth, Houghton looked to rally, scoring four goals in the first four-and-a-half minutes to narrow the gap to 10-7. Hiram added an insurance goal with 1:26 to go in the game when the duo of Lekan and Deegan hooked up again, this time Lekan recorded the goal and Deegan the assist as the Terriers went on to post the 11-7 victory.
Offensively, Legris and Lekan both finished the night with five points to lead the team. Legris scored four goals and had one assist, while Lekan scored a pair of goals and had three assists. Summers had four points with three goals and an assist and Deegan had two goals and an assist for three points. Rounding out the point scorers was Ham with an assist.
In net, sophomore Sawyer Lott (Sunbury/Big Walnut) picked up his second win of the season to improve to 2-4 overall after making 14 saves in 21 shots faced.
Hiram will next travel to Delaware for a NCAC game against Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, Mar. 29. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
