HIRAM, OHIO -- Junior Jessica Bolanz (Randolph/Waterloo) hit a pair of homeruns to help lead the Hiram College softball team post a pair of victories against Ohio Wesleyan University, 9-4 and 4-0, in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Myrtis E. Herndon Field.
In game one, Hiram (10-18, 4-6 NCAC) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run homerun by sophomore All-NCAC outfielder Miranda Wright (Richfield/Revere) for an early 2-0 lead. The Terriers added to their lead with a five-run second that included a two-run homer by Bolanz, her first of the day, to extend the margin to 7-0. Ohio Wesleyan (11-15, 4-8 NCAC) got on the board in the top of the sixth scoring three runs, but Hiram would post two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame thanks to a pair of RBI singles by Wright and junior All-NCAC outfielder Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ont./St. Joseph's) giving the Terriers a 9-3 advantage heading into the seventh inning. The Battling Bishops tallied one run in the seventh, but would not record any more as Hiram went on to claim the 9-4 victory.
Hiram had 11 hits in the game and was led by Wright who finished three-of-four with two runs scored and four RBI. Loyer, Bolanz and sophomore Angela Perella (Lyndhurst/Beaumont) also recorded multiple hits. Loyer went two-of-four with a run scored and a RBI. Bolanz was two-of-three with a run scored and two RBI and Perella ended the game two-of-three with two runs scored.
Freshman pitcher Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge) pitched all seven innings and got the win allowing four runs on 11 hits and struck out three batters.
In game two, the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Hiram tallied four runs on a solo homerun by Bolanz and a three-run homerun by Perella giving the Terriers a 4-0 lead. Solid pitching and defense held the Bishops scoreless in the game as Hiram went on to win by way of a 4-0 shutout to complete the two-game sweep.
Offensively, Hiram had eight hits and three players posted multi-hit games. Perella and Bolanz both finished two-of-three at the plate with Perella adding a run scored and three RBI, while Bolanz added a run scored and a RBI. Sophomore Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua/Crestwood) rounded out the multi-hit efforts going a perfect two-of-two.
On the mound, Garland pitched another complete game to get the win and improved to 8-8 overall for the season. The win was also her second shutout victory of the season. In seven innings, she allowed no runs on seven hits and had two strikeouts.
Hiram is scheduled to travel to University Circle for a non-conference doubleheader against Case on Friday, Apr. 19. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
