Women's Lacrosse Defeated by Walsh
HIRAM, OHIO -- The Hiram College women's lacrosse team was defeated by NCAA Division II Walsh University, 10-6, in a non-conference matchup at Charles A. Henry Field.
Hiram (3-4) began the scoring in the first half with an unassisted goal by sophomore Hannah Schaefer (Kent/Roosevelt) at the 27:57 minute mark to give the Terriers the early lead. Walsh responded with three unanswered goals to take over the lead, 3-1, with 19:39 left in the period. The Terriers evened the game with scores from sophomore Rebecca Goetz (Buffalo, N.Y./Frontier) and a second goal by Schaefer to deadlock the teams at 3-3. The Cavaliers regained the lead at the 8:14 mark with a goal, but Hiram tallied the final score of the half on a free-position shot by freshman Autumn Osgood (Hyde Park, Verm./Lamoille Union) to even the score at 4-4 heading into the locker rooms.
The second half began in similar fashion as the first with Hiram tallying the opening goal, this time on a free-position shot by sophomore JoLyn Grover (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) to put the Terriers ahead, 5-4, with 28:22 left to play. Walsh then posted back-to-back goals to regain the lead with the last one coming with 22:58 remaining to take a 6-5 advantage. Just over three-and-a-half minutes later, Grover recorded her second goal of the game on another free-position opportunity to tie the game again, 6-6, with 19:22 to go. The Grover goal would be the final scoring play for the Terriers the rest of the way as Walsh went on a four-goal scoring streak to end the game and go on to the 10-6 final.
Hiram was led offensively by Grover and Schaefer with a pair of goals each. Grover finished the game with three shots, while Schaefer took a team-high six shots. Osgood and Goetz rounded out the point scorers with a goal each.
In net for the Terriers, sophomore Rebecca Greenhouse (Pittsburgh, Pa./Winchester Thurston) played all 60 minutes and had nine saves. She is now 3-4 overall on the season.
Hiram will begin North Coast Athletic Conference play when it hosts DePauw (Ind.) University on Saturday, Mar. 29 at Henry Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
