Terriers Drop Road Test at Wooster

Dec. 6 – HIRAM, Ohio – The Hiram College men's basketball team struggled in the second half, falling to The College of Wooster, 91-70, on Wednesday evening.

The loss drops the Terriers to 2-4 (1-1 NCAC), while the Fighting Scots improve to 4-3 (2-2 NCAC) on the season.

Hiram hung tough with the conference's pre-season favorite in the first half, despite Wooster jumping out to an 11-1 lead in the first 3:30.

A quick, 7-0, run by the Terriers got Hiram back in the ball game. Terrence Warren stopped the Wooster run with a jumper. That was then followed by a layup by Isaiah Matthews and a three-point bucket from Sherman Dean III, cutting the Scot lead to 11-8.

Trailing by seven with just 2:25 remaining in the half (31-24), Hiram closed the first 20 minutes with a 12-4 run, taking a one-point lead into the break.

After the two sides traded baskets, Paul Ortiz knocked down his first triple of the game to cut the Wooster advantage to four (33-29). Matthews then scored a pair of free throws. Freshman Jalen Kirksey finished the comeback with five-straight points to give Hiram a 36-35 lead at the break.

The Terriers shot 46% in the opening half, and were led by nine points from Warren. Kirksey added six in the frame, while Matthews also finished the first 20 minutes with six points.

Hiram could not keep up the offensive efficiency throughout the game, however, as they saw themselves outscored 56-34 in the second half.

Tied at 44-44 with 15:11 to play in regulation, the Fighting Scots took control of the game, using an 18-5 advantage to open a double-digit lead. The Scots knocked down a trio of three pointers in the run, and the Terriers were not able to bring the lead back to single digits for the remainder of the contest.

The three-point shot served as the difference in the game as Wooster connected on 7-of-13 in the second half, while the Terriers hit just one. For the game, the Scots were 10-23, while Hiram shot just 4-for-24 from beyond the three-point arc.

Offensively, senior Kelvin Jones finished the game with a team-high 18. He also added 10 boards for his third double-double of the season. Warren was the only other Terrier in double figures, finishing the game with 11.

The Terriers will be back in action on Saturday, December 9, as they return home to take on Allegheny College. The matchup with the Gators is set for a 1 p.m. start.
