WASHINGTON, Pa. - November 23, 2019 – Hiram Terriers men's basketball fell to the Washington & Jefferson College Presidents, 81-74 on Saturday at the Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
Following two quick buckets from the Presidents to open the first half, a 14-5 run over the next 5:57 put the Terriers up five with 12:24 to play in the first half.
The Terriers and Presidents went back-and-forth, trading buckets with neither team able to cut into and build much larger of a lead until a 6-0 run cut Hiram's lead to just one, 26-25, with 6:33 to play in the first.
Hiram though, answered with a run of their own, holding Washington & Jefferson to just two buckets and five points over the next five minutes to take a 41-30 with just over a minute remaining in the first half.
A pair of Washington & Jefferson free throws and Brodgie Gordon's layup made it a 17-7 run over the final 6:02 of the first half, and the Terriers headed into the locker room up 11, 43-32.
Hiram extended its 11-point lead to open the second half. Tyler McMillion's opening bucket gave the Terriers a 45-32 lead, and Hiram would later take its largest lead of the game, a 14-point, 58-44 lead, on Jalen Kirksey's three-pointer with 13:10 remaining.
But the Presidents held the Terriers to just four points over the next 5:38, outscoring Hiram, 18-4, over the stretch to tie the score at 62. Washington & Jefferson then took the lead on AJ Blue's and-one and Jacob Davenport's three-pointer, making it a 24-4 run to give the Presidents a 68-62 lead.
Hiram wouldn't go quietly, battling back to cut the deficit to three on Gordon's three-pointer with 4:51 to play. A layup and a pair of free throws brought the Presidents' lead back out seven, but again the Terriers got within one possession on Austin Blatt's three-pointer and a pair of free throws from Kirksey.
However, the Terriers would get no closer, as Cameron Seemann's and-one gave Washington & Jefferson a five-point lead before the Presidents sealed it with four free throws, pulling out the 81-74 victory.
Hiram falls to 2-3 with the loss, while Washington & Jefferson moves to 5-1 with the win.
Kirksey turned in an all-around performance, leading the Terriers with 20 points and adding eight rebounds, five assists, four blocks and two steals, while Dean III tallied 19 points and three rebounds.
