HIRAM, OHIO -- The Hiram College men's lacrosse team rallied from a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter, but would fall short of Bethany (W.Va.) College, 10-9, in a non-conference game and home opener at Charles A. Henry Field.
Hiram (1-1) got on the board first with a goal at the 14:14 minute mark of the first quarter from freshman Douglas Legris (Fairfax, Verm./Bellows Free Academy). Bethany (3-3) evened the score at 1-1 with a score with 9:50 to go in the period, but the Terriers regained the lead near the end of the quarter with a second goal by Legris to go up 2-1. The Bison added a pair of goals to conclude the first 15 minutes to move ahead on the scoreboard, 3-2.
Bethany tallied the first score of the second quarter for a third unanswered goal, to extend the lead to 4-2. Hiram sophomore John Deegan (Lakewood/St. Edward) got the Terriers to within a goal shortly after at the 10:32 mark on a man-up advantage with an assist from All-North Coast Athletic Conference sophomore Greg Summers (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary's) to make it a 4-3 ball game. The Bison then went on a four-goal scoring streak that included a pair of goals to end the half to take a 6-3 margin into the locker rooms.
In the third quarter, Bethany scored back-to-back goals to end their scoring run and take a sizeable 8-3 lead. Hiram narrowed the gap with a score by freshman Charlie Haley (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forrest) with 9:40 left in the period to make the score 8-4. The Bison answered the Haley goal with a goal of their own with 7:37 remaining go back up by five goals, 9-4. The Terriers then began their rally scoring five straight times that extended into the fourth quarter, but began with a score by sophomore Chris Lekan (North Olmsted/Holy Name) on a man-up opportunity with an assist from Haley. Legris tallied his third goal of the game just before the end of the third period to round out the scoring as Hiram trailed 9-6 heading into the fourth quarter.
Hiram scored three goals in the final quarter including a marker by freshman Garet Johnston (Kent/Wooster) to begin the period, with an assist from Lekan, to make the score 9-7 with 9:30 to go in the game. Summers found the back of the net with a little under five minutes to go to pull Hiram to within a goal, 9-8. About a minute-and-a-half later, sophomore Alex Ham (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin) netted the game-tying goal, with another helper by Lekan, with 3:23 remaining and a score of 9-9. But it would be Bethany who'd record the go-ahead and game-winning goal at the 1:20 mark and held on for the 10-9 victory.
Offensively, Hiram was led by Legris with three goals on 10 shots. Lekan also had three points on the day with a goal and a team-high two assists, while Summers and Haley both finished the game with two points, scoring a goal and an assist. Haley was also 13-of-19 in the faceoff circle. Ham, Deegan and Johnston all added a point to their season totals with a goal each.
In net, sophomore Sawyer Lott (Sunbury/Big Walnut) played all 60 minutes and made nine saves. Following the outcome of the game, he is now 1-1 overall for the season.
Hiram is scheduled to travel to Alliance for a non-conference game against the University of Mount Union on Wednesday, Mar. 19. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
