Aug. 28- HIRAM, Ohio- Despite graduating a trio of players, the Hiram College men's soccer program enters the 2019 season looking to rely on their strong pool of veteran leadership.
This fall, Hiram will return 17 upperclassmen, including seven seniors.
The midfield has a strong group of five returners including senior Stephen Barimah, junior Bryce Harding, and sophomores Mikyas Maru, Isaac Opoku, and Ben Zuniga.
Barimah played in 14 games including scoring one of two Hiram goals in the matchup against Medaille (N.Y.).
Opoku made a major splash in his first year with the Terriers with 15 game appearances including posting his first career goal against Oberlin on Oct. 6.
The defensive side of the ball looks to be just as experienced with a total of four players. This group includes sophomore Matthew Zilla and will be led by three of the seven seniors Brian Corbin, Saint Roger Bountsebe, and Sam Reckley.
The Terrier offense will feature five letter winners junior Giovanni Meza, senior Taje Davis, sophomore Tommy Rink, senior Austin Blatt, and sophomore Ali Al-Khatib.
Meza paced Hiram last season in goals (5), including a game-winning goal in the matchup against Oberlin on Oct. 6.
In net, the duo CJ Keith and Shelby Edwards return to the frontlines after splitting time in goal last year. Keith will enter his senior season after making a start in 12 games finishing the 2018 season with 27 saves. The Burbank, Ohio native ranked fifth in the conference in total saves. In his freshman season, Edwards left his mark in goal with five-game appearances and three starts.
The Terriers will add 12 fresh faces this season including freshman forward Vincent Rienzi.
The defense will add four players to the experienced group. Issrael Morales, Keagan Le'Roux, Noah Cieza, and Benjamin Semrau are all set to hit the field this year.
Joining the veterans in the midfield will be Noah Pharr, Asish Pandey, Cameron Atwell, Julian Diaz, and Antonio Vitale.
The 2019 schedule will feature eight home matchups and ten travel dates. The Terriers will open their season on the road August 30th and 31st when they travel to Defiance for the Purple & Gold Classic.
The Terriers will host Medaille (N.Y.) on Friday, September 6 for their first home game of the season.
The NCAC schedule begins on Saturday, September 28 when Hiram host Wittenberg. The Terriers will also host Wabash (Ind.), Wooster, and Kenyon, while traveling to DePauw (Ind.), Oberlin, Allegheny (Pa.), Denison, and Ohio Wesleyan. Hiram's non-conference matchups this season will include Edgewood, Bethany (W.Va.), Westminster (Pa.), Heidelberg, Wash. & Jeff., Mount Union, and Albion (Mich.).
