March-13-HIRAM, Ohio- Despite a third set spark, the men's volleyball team fell 3-1 to Thiel, Tuesday night.
Thiel was off to a quick start, taking the first set 25-22. Freshman duo Justin English and Alex Andrzejewski combined for all eight of Hiram's kills in the opening set.
In the second set, the Terriers tied the match nine different times before taking the lead another five times. The Tomcats took a 13-7 advantage on kills in the frame, before securing the set with an 8-1 run (25-18).
Hiram played the third set close, working out the kinks eventually taking a 13-12 advantage in kills. In the frame, the Terriers hit .258 holding the Tomcats to just .086. With the scoring momentum swinging from side to side the game was eventually tied 19-19. Multiple attack errors from the Tomcats and quick work from Fischer and Andrzejewski allowed Hiram to secure their first set of the game (25-21).
Hiram opened up the last set with a 5-1 run. Thiel would tie up the game four times (9-9) before holding the lead in the middle stages of the last frame with an 11-9 advantage. Hiram would come back and tie the game up, off back-to-back Terrier kills from freshman Brent Bierek and Andrzejewski to knott the score at 20-20.
The Tomcats would once again have an answer, outscoring Hiram 5-1 giving Thiel the set win and the 3-1 game victory.
Setter Jake Lininger recorded 21 assists and six digs.
Offensively, the Terriers were led by Andrzejewski with 14 kills and seven digs, and Fischer tallied nine kills and eight digs. While English added five kills.
The Terriers will be back in action on Friday, March 16 when they take on St. John (N.Y.) Fisher and Baruch. The matchups are slated for 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
