Jan.25-HIRAM, Ohio- Playing in the first day of the Terrier Winter Invitational, the Hiram men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Loras, Friday evening.
The Terriers dropped the match by set scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-16.
After trading service errors, Cory Fischer posted the first kill of the game to take an early 3-2 advantage. The set was played close with the Terriers taking their final lead at 14-13.
The Duhawks controlled the rest of the set, jumping out to a 19-14 lead off a 6-0 run. The Terriers would get as close as two but could never overtake the advantage, falling in the set 25-19.
In the second set, Hiram and the Duhawks would go back-and-forth throughout the frame, seeing 11 ties, including a 20-20 deadlock off an ace from freshman Dangelo Boehner. Loras used a 3-0 run to pull ahead 23-20.
The Terriers responded with a mirroring 3-0 run to knot the score one final time at 23-23. A Hiram service error proved costly, with Loras holding a final 2-0 advantage, finishing set two with a final score of 25-23.
The Terriers never held the lead in set three but kept the game close through the mid stages of the set. However, trailing by three (10-7), Hiram fell prey to a 10-4 run by the Duhawks, that pushed the lead to 20-11. Hiram would fall in the game, 25-16.
Offensively, Fischer and Kilvio Montero led the Hiram offense with five kills apiece. Andrew Gard and Tom Supan each posted four, while Andrew Diaz added nine assists.
The Terriers will continue to play on Saturday afternoon with a pair of games against Concordia Wisconsin and St. John (N.Y.) Fisher. The matchup with the Falcons is scheduled for 10 a.m., while the Cardinals are slated to take on Hiram at 4 p.m.
