SPRINGFIELD, Ohio- Behind a solid pitching performance from sophomore Bailey Scheck, along with some timely hitting, the Hiram College softball team captured a pair of victories against Wittenberg, Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers earned a 4-3 victory in the first game, before tallying a shutout (7-0) in the second game.
In the circle, Scheck collected two victories pitching 14 innings with 13 strikeouts.
Hiram's dominance didn't stop on the mound they also found success on base. In the third inning, freshman Leah Valdez singled to right field to score freshman Isabelle Gonzales.
The fourth inning was a silent one for the Terriers and the Tigers.
Hiram did the rest of their offensive work in the fifth inning, starting with a single to right center from junior Shalynn Call to bring home sophomore Mariah Sheffield and junior Isabelle Miranda.
Scheck closed out the scoring action with the last Hiram run of the game (4-2).
The host would add just one last run in the seventh, but it would not be enough to hold off the Terriers (4-3).
In the second game, Scheck collected her third win of the season with a complete game shutout and eight of her 13 strikeouts on the day.
The Terriers made their mark in the third and seventh inning. A trio of runs from freshman Giselle Chavez, Scheck, and Gonzales highlighted the third inning (3-0).
In the seventh, freshman Mikaylin Moore, Miranda, freshman Kaitlyn Saffel, and Gonzalez each contributed a run in the frame.
Offensively, Gonzalez paced the Terriers with a multi-hit game finishing with two runs.
The Terriers will return to work on Tuesday, April 9, as they travel to Allegheny. The doubleheader matchup is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. start.
