LOUISVILLE, Ky. - October 3, 2019 – Hiram Terriers softball sophomores Giselle Bahena and Bailey Scheck were named 2019 Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Wednesday.
Bahena batted .385/.453/.510 with seven doubles, three triples, 19 runs scored and 14 RBI. Bahena also added 11 walks and four stolen bases in five attempts while seeing time at both catcher and third base.
Scheck led the Terriers in the circle, going 9-12 with a 3.29 ERA in 139.1 innings pitched. Scheck made 23 starts and 25 appearances, striking out 90 batters while allowing just three home runs. Scheck also pitched 15 complete games, striking out 4.62 batters per seven innings.
The NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes recognize the academic prowess of student-athletes and teams across the NFCA's six membership categories. NCAA Division III led the way with 1,928 student-athletes earning a 3.5 grade-point average or higher for the 2018-19 academic year, while NCAA Division I and Division II followed with 1,769 and 1,306 honorees.
For the first time in NFCA history, over 8,000 student-athletes were named 2019 Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes.
With just one graduating senior, the Terriers will look to improve upon an 11-24-1 (6-10 NCAC) campaign when they take the field in 2020.
