MEADVILLE, Pa. -- The Hiram College women's basketball team fell in its NCAC opener at Allegheny (Pa.) by a 69-52 score on Wednesday evening.
The Terriers drop to 5-3 on the season and 0-1 in conference play, while the Gators stand at 4-3, 1-0.
Sophomore Allison Vannoy (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) added eight points and four assists.
A free throw from sophomore Mercedes Jones (Dayton, Ohio/Ponitz Career Technology Center) put Hiram in front early on, before the Gators answered with six straight points to take a 11-7 lead. Allegheny led 13-12 after one quarter of play.
A Yost free throw put the Terriers trimmed a Hiram deficit to 19-17. The Gators would score the final 11 points of the period, holding Hiram scoreless during that stretch, to take a 30-17 lead into the break.
Jones would convert on a layup to bring Hiram to within seven points at 44-37 with just under two minutes left in the third quarter. The Gators would respond with four points to take 48-37 lead heading into the fourth.
Junior Dana Perrotta (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) scored first in the fourth quarter to cut Hiram's deficit to 48-39.
Allegheny would score the next six points to open up a 54-39 lead and put the game away.
Hiram finished the game 21-of-63 (33.9 percent) from the field, while the Gators were 27-of-71 (38.0 percent).
Allegheny held a 51-37 edge in rebounding and 28-14 advantage in bench scoring.
Kaitlyn Fromknecht came off the bench to post a triple double for the Gators, finishing with 10 points, 13 rebounds and 11 blocks.
The Terriers will continue conference play on Saturday, with a 1 p.m. road contest at Kenyon.
