HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Hiram College women's soccer team opened the 2012 season against Houghton College, but fell to the Highlanders, 4-1, in non-conference action in Houghton, N.Y.
With the loss, the Terriers fall to 0-1 overall and the Highlanders begin their season with a 1-0 mark.
Houghton wasted no time in getting on the board first, needing just 1:20 to take the early lead thanks to a goal by Stephany Ellison. But Hiram answered with a goal during the 15th minute off the foot of sophomore forward/midfielder Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua/Crestwood) to even the score at 1-1. The goal was assisted by senior defender/midfielder Lyndsay Witmer (Ashland/Hillsdale). Neither team managed to break the stalemate during the remainder of the period as both teams took a 1-1 tie into the locker rooms.
Houghton again struck early, just nine seconds into the second period, to move ahead with a score of 2-1. The Highlanders got some breathing room later in the half during the 67th minute on a goal by Darlene Eckhardt making the score 3-1. Houghton then put the game away with its fourth goal of the game at the 73:09 minute mark to seal a 4-1 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Kailie Reed (Wadsworth) played all 90 minutes in her collegiate debut allowing four goals and tallied eight saves.
Hiram returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 1) when the Terriers travel to Buffalo, N.Y. for a non-conference matchup against Medaille College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
