HIRAM, OHIO -- The Hiram College women's soccer team tallied two second-half goals en route to a 2-0 shutout against Waynesburg (Pa.) College at the Charles A. Henry Field.
With the win, the Terriers improve to 2-3 overall and the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-1 overall for the season.
Following a scoreless first half, Hiram broke the stalemate at the 59:11 minute mark when sophomore forward/midfielder Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua/Crestwood) found the back of the net on a penalty kick to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead. Hiram then added an insurance goal during the 66th minute off the foot of senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference midfielder Ernestina Zappa (Brooklyn/Laurel), her third of the season, to extend the margin to 2-0. Junior midfielder/defenseman Megan Verel (Aurora) was credited with an assist on the Zappa goal. The Terriers continued to hold Waynesburg scoreless in the final minutes to go on to the 2-0 shutout.
In goal, senior netminder Kate Valaitis (Lewis Center/Olentangy) got her first win of the season and is now 1-2 overall. The win was also her first shutout victory of the year. In 90 minutes, she allowed no goals and had one save.
Hiram is scheduled to host Baldwin Wallace University on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
