HIRAM, OHIO -- The Hiram College women's soccer team tied Baldwin Wallace University, 1-1, in double overtime in a non-conference game at the Hiram Soccer Complex.
Following tonight's game, the Terriers are now 2-3-1 overall and the Yellow Jackets are now 3-0-3 overall for the season.
Neither team scored any goals in the first half despite Baldwin Wallace outshooting Hiram, 11-0, in the period.
Hiram broke the tie early in the second period at the 49:45 minute mark when sophomore forward/midfielder Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua/Crestwood) found the back of the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season, making the score 1-0. The goal was assisted by senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference midfielder Ernestina Zappa (Brooklyn/Laurel). Following a missed penalty kick that would have given the Terriers a 2-0 advantage, the Yellow Jackets scored the equalizer just before the end of the game during the 89th minute from Audrie Wolfe to even the score at 1-1 to send the game into overtime.
Both teams failed to score the game winner in either overtime period as the game would end in a 1-1 tie.
In goal for Hiram, senior Kate Valaitis (Lewis Center/Olentangy) played all 110 minutes allowing one goal and had 13 saves. She now has a 1-2-1 overall record for the season.
Hiram will travel to Hamburg, N.Y. for a non-conference matchup against Hilbert College on Saturday, Sept. 15. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
