HAMBURG, N.Y. -- The Hiram College women's soccer team defeated Hilbert (N.Y.) College, 3-0, in a non-conference game in Hamburg, N.Y.
With the win, the Terriers improve to 3-3-1 overall and the Hawks fall to 1-4 overall for the season.
All of the scoring in the game came in the second half when senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference midfielder Ernestina Zappa (Brooklyn/Laurel) broke the 0-0 tie with a goal at the 58:36 minute mark to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead. Zappa's goal was assisted by sophomore midfielder Kelsey Martin (Austintown/Fitch). Hiram added to its lead during the 69th minute when senior midfielder/forward Stephanie Takeuchi (Milton, Ontario/E.C. Drury) capitalized on a penalty kick increasing the lead to a pair of goals. Senior defender Breann Mason (Mentor/Lake Catholic) sealed the victory for the Terriers with the game's last goal at the 70:00 mark as Hiram went on to post the 3-0 shutout.
In net for Hiram, senior Kate Valaitis (Lewis Center/Olentangy) started the game and played the first 45 minutes allowing no goals and tallied one save. Freshman Kailie Reed (Wadsworth) came on in the second half and got the win to improve to 2-1 for the season. In 45 minutes, she allowed no goals and had no saves.
Hiram will host John Carroll University on Monday, Sept. 27 in a non-conference game. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
