Women's Soccer Snaps Winless Streak with Shutout of Ohio Wesleyan

HIRAM, OHIO  --  Sophomore forward/midfielder Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua/Crestwood) scored two goals as the Hiram College women's soccer team defeated Ohio Wesleyan University, 3-0, in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Charles A. Henry Field.

With the win, the Terriers ended a three-game winless streak and improved to 4-5-2 overall and 1-1 in the NCAC.  The Battling Bishops fell to 3-6-1 overall and 0-1 NCAC.

The only goal of the first half, and game-winner, came off the foot of senior All-NCAC midfielder Ernestina Zappa (Brooklyn/Laurel) at the 18:45 minute mark with an assist from freshman midfielder/forward Irelie Riggle (Sugarcreek/Hiland).  The goal also ended a three-game scoreless drought for the Terriers as they went into the locker rooms with a narrow 1-0 edge.

In the second half, Hiram got some breathing room when Zuponcic recorded her first goal late in the game during the 82nd minute to put the Terriers up 2-0.  Junior midfielder/defenseman Megan Verel (Aurora) was credited with the assist on Zuponcic's first goal.  Shortly after, Zuponcic sealed the victory when she found the back of the net for a second time at the 85:21 mark, with an assist from senior defenseman Breann Mason (Mentor/Lake Catholic), as Hiram went on to post the 3-0 shutout.

In net, senior Kate Valaitis (Lewis Center/Olentangy) played all 90 minutes, claiming her second victory of the season and her second shutout win.  She is now 2-2-2 overall for the year.  She allowed no goals and stopped all four shots she faced.

Hiram will be off until next Saturday, Oct. 6 when the Terrriers travel to Springfield for a NCAC game against Wittenberg University.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
