The Terrier volleyball team finished off a perfect opening to the season as Hiram earned a pair of sweeps on the second day of the La Roche College Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Terriers upended Medaille, 3-0, before taking down the host Red Hawks, 3-0.
In the victory over the Mavericks, the Terriers held the control throughout, winning sets one (25-14) and two (25-11) by double digits, before taking set three, 25-21.
The first set was controlled by the Terrier right out of the gate as Hiram ran out to a 14-4 advantage. Senior Holly Hoffman put together three service aces in the opening four points to set the tone early.
Hiram would run the set lead to as many as 12 (17-5) on a kill by Jaya Martin, before going on for the 11-point win.
Junior Jessica Caspio set the pace in the second set, rattling off three-straight kills as Hiram ran out to a 6-0 advantage. She finished the set with five total kills, helping the Terriers to a 25-11 advantage in the second set.
The third and final set was tightly contested, but Hiram never trailed. Leading 16-14, the Terriers put the match away with a 7-3 run that included kills from Martin, Caspio and Lindsey Walker. Madison Fortune finished the third set off with a kill, giving the Terriers the 25-21 set win, and the match, 3-0.
Fortune, Walker and Caspio all tied for the team lead with eight kills, each. Kiara Franks and Jaya Martin each added seven while Hoffman dished out 35 assists to go along with a team-high five service aces.
Martin was efficient once again for the Terriers, hitting .500 on just 12 total chances.
Against La Roche, Hiram was again dominant, winning the match by scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-13.
Sticking with the trend, the Terriers ran out to an early lead in the opening set, but found themselves up by just two, 8-6.
With the lead cut down to one, 16-15, Hiram rallied behind three more kills from Martin to outscore La Roche 9-5 and take the first set, 25-20.
The second set saw the Terriers push their early advantage to 13-4. Aces by Walker and Caspio, as well as four more kills from Martin helped fuel the opening run.
The lead grew to as many as 12 (19-7), before the hosts made a run of their own. The Redhawks outscored Hiram 13-3 to cut a 12 point advantage down to just two (22-20). However, Walker came back with a kill, which was followed by back-to-back kills from Kayla Cole, putting the set away.
Hiram trailed for the first time all day, 9-8, in the early stages of set three. An 11-point run by the Terriers removed all doubt in the set, changing a one-point deficit into a 10-point advantage. Cole posted four kills in the run, while Hoffman added two more aces to her total.
The Terriers would ride the momentum to a 25-13 victory in the third set, earning the three-game sweep and a 3-0 start for the second-consecutive season.
Cole paced the offense in game two, posting 13 kills and nine digs while hitting .323 on the day. Martin tallied eight kills, while Franks finished with seven.
Martin was a spark in the middle of the offense the whole weekend for Hiram, totaling 20 kills in three matches, while committing just two errors for a hitting percentage of .563.
Hoffman added her second double-double of the season, posting 27 assists while adding a team-high 10 digs. Schady also added 10 for the defense, while Lindsey Stahl and Walker each added eight.
Hiram will look to keep the momentum rolling on Tuesday, September 4 as they open their 2018 home schedule against Adrian College. The matchup with the bulldogs is scheduled for a 6:30 start.
